Birth to Death: Cannabis in Pregnancy and the Elderly

From Birth to Death: Cannabis in Pregnancy and the Elderly

The use of marijuana has increased as more states have enacted medical marijuana and recreational use laws. Some populations may be especially vulnerable to the impact of marijuana, especially pregnant women and her fetus as well as the elderly. Body and brain changes that occur in these populations create a need for careful discussion regarding marijuana use. Of great concern is prenatal marijuana exposure on brain development and drug dose and metabolism issues in the elderly. It is important for cannabis providers to understand the impact of prenatal marijuana exposure and issues for the elderly population.

  1. Explain the impact of marijuana on the fetus and elderly patient.
  2. Discuss recommendations, guidelines, and counseling strategies for use of cannabis during pregnancy and in the elderly population.
